Physical Therapy for Dancers with Hip Pain

DANCE|PREHAB — Hip Cards
Dance places high-range demands on the hip

The hip is often asked to move at large ranges while maintaining strength and control. Hip pain is usually about more than flexibility, it’s about how that range is created and loaded over time.

Adaptation and injury risk can coexist

Some physical adaptations that support performance can also increase stress at the joint. The same qualities that help a dancer move well can sometimes contribute to symptoms.

The hip is part of a larger movement system

Turnout, alignment, and force transfer involve the pelvis, knee, foot, and ankle too, so a full lower-extremity assessment is often more useful than looking at the hip alone.

Hip Injuries We Treat include:

Hamstring Tendonitis (Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy) / Inflammation or irritation where the hamstrings attach to the pelvis, causing pain at the base of the buttock and hip.

Stress Fractures in the Hip / Small fractures in the femur or pelvic bones caused by overuse and repetitive stress.

Hip Subluxation / Partial dislocation of the hip joint, often due to hypermobility, where the femur slips out of the socket temporarily.

Piriformis Syndrome / Irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, leading to hip and buttock pain.

Hip Flexor Strain / Overstretching or tearing of the hip flexor muscles, often caused by high kicks or extreme range of motion.

Labral Tear / Tear of the cartilage (labrum) surrounding the hip joint, common with repetitive movements or extreme hip positions.

Snapping Hip Syndrome / A snapping sensation or sound during hip movement, caused by tight tendons or muscles rubbing over bones.

Hip Impingement (Femoroacetabular Impingement – FAI) / Abnormal contact between the hip joint bones, causing pain and reduced range of motion.

Trochanteric Bursitis / Inflammation of the bursa over the greater trochanter, causing pain on the outer side of the hip.

Iliopsoas Tendonitis / Inflammation of the iliopsoas tendon, causing pain in the front of the hip, often from overuse or repetitive flexion.

Hip Dislocation (Post-Surgical Rehab) / When the femur head slips out of the hip socket, often due to trauma or hypermobility, requiring rehabilitation post-surgery.

Adductor Strain (Groin Pull) / Overstretching or tearing of the inner thigh muscles, often caused by extreme movements like splits.

Gluteal Tendinopathy / Degeneration or inflammation of the gluteal tendons, leading to pain on the outside of the hip.
