Lessons from Juilliard: Dance, Identity, and Wellness with Emily Okamoto

“Community is so important, because I remember moments like that for the rest of my life. Those are the people that […] inform how I think of my mind and my body…”

Emily Okamoto

Hi everyone! In this episode, I catch up with Emily Okamoto, a wonderful dancer I’ve had the chance to support here at DANCEPREHAB both in healing and health.

Emily is a rising senior at the Juilliard school in New York, and shares her journey through training, injury, identity, and how this all plays a part in wellness and being able to sustain her training and learning. We talk about what it means to grow as a student, to navigate uncertainty, and to make sense of both the physical and emotional demands of dance.

This conversation reminds us that when we listen closely to the dancer’s experience, we learn how to support them better—through care, through clarity, and as you’ll find through Emily’s words – through community. Let’s dive in!

Two individuals posing together in a gym setting. One is a young woman wearing a black hoodie and gray pants, while the other is a man in a gray long-sleeve shirt and beanie. They both smile, standing in front of gym equipment and a treatment table.
