Rebuilding Trust and Confidence After Injury at DANCEPREHAB Physical Therapy

What does it really mean to be ready to return to dance?

For many dancers, the answer seems simple. The pain has settled, strength is improving, and it’s time to get back to class or rehearsal. But as many injured dancers quickly discover, returning to dance isn’t only about whether the body has healed. It’s also about whether you trust your body enough to perform again.

In our latest conversation, professional dancer with Backhaus Dance and Chapman University faculty member Kira Bartoli-Lemon reflects on what rehabilitation looked like throughout multiple injuries, including hamstring tears and an ACL sprain. Rather than focusing only on timelines or exercises, Kira shares how recovery became a process of rebuilding confidence, understanding her body, and preparing for the demands of performance.

One of the themes that stood out most was the difference between being cleared to dance and feeling prepared to dance. As dancers, we’re often asked to move with speed, power, precision, and artistry under fatigue. Rehabilitation has to prepare us for those realities, not just everyday movement. Kira shares how working with a dance-specific physical therapist helped bridge that gap and gave her greater confidence returning to rehearsals and performances.

Our conversation also explores how rehabilitation extended beyond the clinic. As a faculty member at Chapman University, Kira now carries many of those lessons into her own classroom. From helping students better understand their bodies to recognizing when someone needs additional support, her experience has shaped the way she teaches, communicates, and helps dancers navigate training.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that rehabilitation should leave dancers with more than a healed injury. It should provide a better understanding of your body, a more intentional approach to preparation, and the confidence to navigate the demands of dance long after physical therapy has ended.

If you’re recovering from an injury, supporting dancers as an educator, or simply interested in what return to performance really looks like, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to hear Kira’s story. Her experiences reflect many of the conversations we have every day at DANCE|PREHAB and serve as a reminder that successful rehabilitation isn’t just about returning to dance. It’s about preparing for everything dance asks of you next.
